Defining the field of psychology is almost impossible. Generally speaking, it is the scientific study of behavior, mental processes, and the relation between the two in a person. Psychology embodies all aspects of the human experience; from the biological functions of the brain to the actions of nations, as well as from child development to caring for the aged. Within the human experience, science is used to study all of these facets within different models of investigation. There are many different perspectives within the field of psychology and the way that we should study the human experience. Some call these the Theoretical Schools of Thought, while others simply call them Psychological Perspectives. I’m sure there may be more labels out there, but these are the two that I have come across the most.
Some say that psychology is the science or study of the mind, whereas others say that psychology is the science or study of behavior. Psychology encompasses both, as well as the study of experience or maybe the study of the subconscious. It can be the science of socialness and consciousness. Whatever term is used, psychology is wrapped around the human experience in its entirety. If you want to know more about the different perspectives, please check out the post called the Theoretical Schools of Thought: Psychological Perspectives. This will help you to understand how psychology is studied and how it is used to help people.
